TM Scholars from Case Western Reserve and Saint Louis University Law Schools Win Ladas Memorial Award Competition

NEW YORK - The International Trademark Association (INTA) has announced the winners of the 2013 Ladas Memorial Award, an annual competition for the best original paper on the subject of trademarks.

According to the INTA, awards were presented in both student and professional categories:

Ukeme Awakessien Jeter from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio won in the student category for  her paper “ICANN DOT-Anything: Rethinking the Scope of the New gTLD Expansion, its Effect on Government Regulation, and its Impact on Trademark Owners”.

Yvette Liebesman, Assistant Professor of Law at Saint Louis University School of Law in Saint Louis, Missouri and Benjamin Wilson, Law Clerk for the Honorable William D. Stiehl of the US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois won in the professional category. Their paper, “The Mark of a Resold Good,” assesses the first-sale doctrine and its role in regulating secondary sales, particularly online.

The winners received a cash prize of $2,000 and a set of Stephen P. Ladas’s three-volume treatise, Patents, Trademarks and Related Rights. The winning papers will be published in The Trademark Reporter, INTA’s legal journal.

The Ladas Memorial Award was established in memory of Stephen P. Ladas, a distinguished practitioner and author who was elected posthumously to the Intellectual Property Hall of Fame this year. The competition is sponsored by Ladas & Parry LLP.
