GENEVA - The Preparatory Committee of the Diplomatic Conference for the Adoption of a New Act of the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration concluded a two-day meeting with a decision to hold the diplomatic conference from May 11 to 21, 2015, at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s headquarters in Geneva.

According to the Organization, negotiations on exploring possible improvements to the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration have been held since 2008 in the context of the Working Group on the Development of the Lisbon System which is composed of the 28 member states of the Lisbon Union and other WIPO member states and interested organizations as observers.

At its twenty-fifth session, held from September 22 to October 1, 2009, the Lisbon Union Assembly mandated the Working Group to engage in a full review of the Lisbon System, in view of the need to look for improvements which would make it more attractive for states and users, while preserving the principles and objectives of the Lisbon Agreement.
