PARIS – The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian hosted HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, in his capacity as the Founding Chairman of La Verticale at a business breakfast at the Quai d'Orsay (Foreign Ministry headquarters) in Paris.

The meeting was held in the presence of Chairman and members of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean World Economic Foresight Institute (L’Institut de Prospective Economique du Monde Méditerranéen - IPEMED), an independent Euro-Mediterranean think tank that gathers high-level opinion leaders from both shores of the Mediterranean.

The meeting came followed the completion of the establishment procedures of La Verticale in Brussels by IPEMED.
After an important address by the Minister, the attendees approved the mission, objectives and work mechanism of the Organization which aims at establishing economic, cultural and social cooperation networks between Europe, the Mediterranean, the Arab world and Africa.

Le Drian expressed his support for this project noting that Africa is considered a priority for France and Europe, adding that the two sides are historically joined together by the Mediterranean.

Furthermore, he called on La Verticale to give adequate consideration to youth employment opportunities, Blue Economy and Economic Integration, noting that there are 6,300 French enterprises located in Africa with 620,000 employees.

Meanwhile, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh thanked the Minister for his support and guidance stressing that La Verticale would adopt his talking points in preparing its action plans.

It is worth mentionioning that arrangements are currently being made to host the founding meeting of the organization in December under the auspices of the European Union headquarters in Brussels in the presence of leaderships from the three regions.

The name of the La Verticale was suggested by the French leadership given the fact that if a line was drawn starting from Finland, at the far north of Europe, to South Africa at the bottom of the African continent passing through the Mediterranean, then the line would be vertical.
