World Bank Recognizes Role of Abu-Ghazaleh-Legal as a Global Contributor to Issuing ‘Doing Business 2020’ Report

AMMAN - The World Bank highlighted the important role and contributions of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Legal (TAG-Legal) for the 13th consecutive year in issuing the “Doing Business 2020” as a global contributor.

The World Bank’s statement was based on reports submitted by TAG-Legal on several countries, taking into account that TAG-Legal was selected as a global contributor for the 2nd consecutive year in issuing the Report, after being a regional contributor in previous years. The Report covered Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Indonesia, Pakistan, Cameroon, Nigeria, West Bank, Gaza, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia and the United States of America. 

The World Bank published “Doing Business 2020” Report on October 24, which features for the first time, the best top 20 countries that developed their business practices and improved investment climate in European and African countries including five Arab countries namely Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. 

For her part, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global) Legal Department Manager Ms. Deema Abu-Zulekha, said that TAG-Legal’s contribution to the preparation of the Report was achieved through its offices in 19 countries around the globe, stating that TAG.Global has been taking part in preparing the ‘World Bank Report’ on an annual basis since 2006. 

The World Bank’s Report revealed the improvement of business practices in Jordan which have been implemented in different fields specifically access to credit by introducing a new secured transactions law, amending the insolvency law and launching a unified, modern and notice-based collateral registry. In addition, Jordan made paying taxes easier by implementing electronic filing and payment for labor taxes and other mandatory contributions.

Regarding other Arab countries, the report shows the each country’s improvement; Bahrain has implemented a comprehensive reform program that facilitates doing business in nine areas except in the ‘Starting of a Business’ area. 

Kuwait continued to implement its ‘New Kuwait 2035’ Development Plan as testament of its regulatory and economic reforms; noting that it works on integrating the Platform of Kuwait Business Center with the Public Authority for Civil Information which made it easier for entrepreneurs to obtain a commercial license when starting a business. 

Additionally, the Report mentions that Qatar embarked on an ambitious program to improve its public services, by launching Kahrama (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice simplified property registration procedures and improved the quality of land management system.

For Saudi Arabia, it has made nine business reforms consisting of facilitating the procedures of starting a business, introducing a new construction law, launching a Platform on the Internet to obtain construction permits electronically, in addition to other measures which the Report referred to in detail in the selected countries.
