NEW YORK - The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced in a press release the election of Tiki Dare as the 2021 President of the Association and the Chair of its Board of Directors.

Ms. Dare, Assistant General Counsel at Oracle Corporation, Redwood City, California, assumes her one-year term on January 1, 2021.

As the 2021 President, Ms. Dare, who specializes in trademark and copyright law, will lead INTA in advancing its priorities on intellectual property (IP) policies around the world. She will help shepherd the 2022–2025 Strategic Plan, which will guide the Association’s direction and set its priorities for the coming years.

She succeeds Ayala Deutsch, Executive Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at NBA Properties, Inc., New York, New York.

“I’m honored to be named INTA’s President, and I look forward to taking on the challenge of successfully leading the Association into a new era,” said Ms. Dare. “Brands and intellectual property practice are evolving rapidly amid both challenges and opportunities, offering INTA the enormous potential to weigh in on key issues as well as adapt the organization itself to successfully embrace change.”

INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo noted that Ms. Dare’s extensive experience in the trademark industry, both as in-house counsel and law firm practitioner, is invaluable for this role.

“Tiki is not only a champion for trademark rights, but she is also passionate about issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, sustainability, and innovation—all of which are increasingly part of the industry conversation,” Mr. Sanz de Acedo said. “With her knowledge of issues related to our key policy priorities and her invaluable contributions to INTA over the years, she is well poised to usher us into the future.”

In the past year, Ms. Dare has served as the chair of the Planning Committee and as a member of the In-House Practice of the Future Think Tank.

Ms. Dare has been with Oracle for a decade. Prior, she was Director of Trademarks for Sun Microsystems Inc. for more than 12 years and worked as a law firm attorney. She graduated with a JD/MA from Duke University School of Law and received an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College (cum laude).

At its November meeting, the Board elected as 2021 INTA officers:

President-Elect: Zeeger Vink, Intellectual Property Director, MF Brands Group, Geneva, Switzerland

Vice President: Jomarie Fredericks, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel, Rotary International, Evanston, Illinois

Vice President: Dana Northcott, Associate General Counsel and Vice President, Intellectual Property, Amazon.com, Inc., Bellevue, Washington

Treasurer: Elisabeth Bradley, Vice President, Innovation Law, Trademarks, Copyrights, and Brand Protection, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Princeton, New Jersey

Secretary: Deborah Hampton, Senior Trademark and Copyright Program Manager, The Chemours Company FC, LLC, Wilmington, Delaware

Ms. Hampton’s election as Secretary marks INTA’s first African American officer. Ms. Hampton has been involved in the Association for more than 30 years, including serving on the Board from 2007 to 2009 and as a leader and member of numerous committees and project teams.

In addition to voting in the new slate of officers, as well as directors, the Board passed two resolutions at its November 10 meeting: Harmonization of Preliminary Injunction Legislation, stating INTA’s position on minimum standards for the analysis and grant of preliminary injunctions in trademark matters; and Recommended Procedures to Address Bad Faith Trademark Applications and Registrations, stating INTA’s position on minimum acceptable standards for addressing bad faith trademark applications and registrations.
