UK-Based Solicitor Receives Award for Advancing International Trademark Association’s Objectives

NEW YORK - The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced in a press release that Richard Plaistowe, principal associate at Mills & Reeve LLP, Cambridge, United Kingdom, as the recipient of its 2021 INTA Service Award for the Advancement of Association Objectives.

The global association of brand owners and trademark professionals bestows this award—one of several INTA Service Awards—to one or more individuals of an INTA member organization whose participation, efforts, and innovative thinking during the year have advanced substantive trademark and related intellectual property (IP) law and practice; committee or subcommittee objectives; or the strategic objectives of INTA.

An IP lawyer for nearly 30 years, Mr. Plaistowe currently serves on INTA’s Parallel Imports Committee and previously was a member of the Enforcement Committee, and the Legislation and Regulation Committee.

Since 2018, he has been an invaluable member of the Association’s Brexit Task Force—helping INTA navigate the complex and ongoing IP-related issues involved with the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. He has drafted complex INTA Bulletin articles on the subject, represented INTA at Brexit-related meetings, in, participated in policy dialogues, and organized calls and submissions throughout the year, even when on holiday.

“I am truly honored to have received this year’s award for the Advancement of Association Objectives,” Mr. Plaistowe said. “This recognition by INTA, an organization which has enriched my personal and professional life, is a high point of my life in the intellectual property world.”

In presenting the award to Mr. Plaistowe, INTA President Tiki Dare said, “It is largely thanks to Mr. Plaistowe’s tireless work that INTA’s position on myriad issues related to Brexit were clearly communicated to stakeholders at all levels and our membership has been kept well informed. His passion and enthusiasm for defending the positions of the Association are palpable and his unrelenting dedication to INTA makes him the ideal recipient of this honor.”

Ms. Dare presented Mr. Plaistowe with the award in a video announcement during INTA’s 2021 Annual Meeting Virtual+, taking place November 15 to 19. Throughout the Meeting, Ms. Dare has been announcing the recipients of other INTA Service Awards, the Tomorrow’s Leader Award, and the President’s Award.
