ICANN Announces Effective Dates for Additional Whois Information Policy and Whois Advisory

LOS ANGELES - ICANN announced in a press release that the effective date of the Additional Whois Information Policy (AWIP) and Whois advisory is January 31, 2016. In addition, ICANN has published an updated Whois advisory based on input from the community.

The updated Whois advisory is intended to provide clarification for contracted parties regarding Registration Data Directory Service (RDDS) specifications of the Registry Agreement and Registrar Accreditation Agreement. RDDS specifications are also known as Whois.

Registries and Registrars have until 31 January 2016 to implement the AWIP and the Whois advisory. Contracted parties will receive formal notice within the next two weeks.

ICANN's mission is to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet.
